Australian Open: British No 1 Cameron Norrie beats Casper Ruud to reach second week in Melbourne for first time

British No 1 Cameron Norrie powers past Casper Ruud 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 6-3 to reach the second week of the Australian Open for the first time in his career; we will bring you live scores, reports, analysis and features from Melbourne over the next fortnight Cameron Norrie, Britain’s sole survivor in singles’ competition, made it through to the second week of the Australian Open for the first time thanks to a fabulous four-set victory over Casper Ruud. Norrie had never beaten a player ranked as high as world No 11 Ruud at a major tournament while he had lost all three previous matches against the Norwegian, who is a three-time Grand Slam finalist. But the 28-year-old played with purpose and aggression to claim a 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 6-3 victory. Normally known as a baseline grinder, Norrie came to the net 56 times during the contest and cracked an impressive 63 winners. Norrie vs Ruud: Tale of the Tape Norrie Match Stats Ruud 11 Aces 19 3 Double Faults 4 77% 1st serve win percentage 75% 62% 2nd serve win percentage 47% 41/56 Net points won 14/28 4/6 Break points won 1/10 63 Total winners 54 36 Unforced errors 28 133 Total points won 118 Given the occasion, this is one of the best wins of his career and he said: “It’s so special. I just kept a really good level throughout the match. “I’ve been working really hard in the off-season on trying to be a little bit more aggressive. I managed to free up in the match and I really let go.” Ruud’s forehand is a formidable weapon and Norrie went straight after his backhand, which paid immediate dividends with a break for 2-1. The British No 1 had to dig deep to hold onto his advantage, getting out of a hole at 0-40 in the sixth game and saving another break point at 5-4 before serving it out. Ruud was the better player in the second set – Norrie again recovered from 0-40 in the third game – with the Norwegian barely facing any pressure on serve. The tie-break should have been Norrie’s, though, but he narrowly missed a backhand down the line at 6-4 and Ruud saved another set point with a big serve before clinching his second opportunity with an ace. Sitting down at one set all must have been galling for Norrie, and Ruud seemed to have taken a grip on the match when he finally converted his ninth break point to lead 3-2. However, Norrie hit straight back, with Ruud suddenly the man under pressure on his serve. The former Wimbledon semi-finalist was coming to the net on virtually every point and he created a set point at 5-4, taking it when Ruud netted a backhand. The 11th seed had also played a five-setter in the second round but the fight seemed to drain out of him at the start of the fourth and, although he did force a break point at 2-4, Norrie again had the answer. Speaking about the atmosphere on John Cain Arena, Norrie added: “There was all sorts of nicknames out there. Come on Noz-dog, Noz, all things like that. It was good stuff. I could tell you guys had had a few drinks on a Saturday afternoon – really good atmosphere!” Norrie will face sixth seed Alexander Zverev or unseeded American teenager Alex Michelsen in the last 16 on Monday. Is Norrie the new Henman? Norrie turned into Tim Henman on John Cain today with the Brit changing his game plan to finally get that illusive win over Ruud and he thoroughly deserved it too. He came to the net 56 times, winning 41 of those points and even took to serve-and-volleying at the big moments. It was like watching Henman in his prime at Wimbledon, but here Norrie knew what he had to do to subdue the three-time Grand Slam finalist, executing a total of 63 winners and claiming one of his greatest Grand Slam wins. This is a throwback to the Norrie we saw winning the title in Indian Wells as well as reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon. He may have dropped off the radar last year, but Cam is back to his best here in Melbourne and there’s real hope he can go even deeper into this tournament.

Kylian Mbappe’s meeting with Liverpool owner on private jet as transfer talk intensifies

Long-term Real Madrid target Kylian Mbappe is now the subject of interest from Premier League giants Liverpool as his Paris Saint-Germain contract nears its end Kylian Mbappe’s club future is once again the subject of discussion but some reports are now touting him with a move to Liverpool, rather than Real Madrid. The Paris Saint-Germain superstar is out of contract with the French giants come the end of the current campaign and has long been widely tipped to join Real Madrid. The Spanish giants have been interested in the World Cup winner for nearly three years, but a move has never materialised. However, there is talk that suggests that Los Blancos are no longer in pole position to sign Mbappe, amid interest from the Reds. The 25-year-old came close to making the move to Anfield once before, back in 2017 before his move to Paris. At the time, Mbappe was weighing up the idea of swapping Monaco for Merseyside and according to L’Equipe, even held a two-hour with Reds owner John W. Henry on his private jet to discuss the idea of a transfer. The French outlet reported that Henry tried to win over both Mbappe and his family by flying his private jet to Monaco and inviting them on board. The rumour mill has started to turn with reports suggesting Jurgen Klopp is keen on reigniting the club’s interest in Mbappe given they would not have pay a penny in transfer fees. However, PSG haven’t lost hope of convincing the forward to pen an extension at the Parc des Princes. PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi discussed the situation in detail while on the Rothen s’enflamme RMC podcast. He explained: “Look, I am not trying to hide anything. “I want Kylian Mbappe to stay at PSG. He’s the best player in the world and the best club for him is PSG. “He is central to our project. We have done a lot of things, some have worked more than others. We have made mistakes and this is normal. Now we have a young team, with French players, and we are not in a hurry, this is for the long term. “We have put together a team that is solid on a technical level and our system of play has been changed and it is a pleasure to watch this team. We play as a team, we defend as a team, it is magnificent.” Though Liverpool are delighted by the fact that Mbappe would arrive on a free, it is believed that the Reds would have to restructure their entire wage system if the Frenchman was to join. The Telegraph claim that Mbappe’s representatives are demanding a salary of £64.5million a year after tax, which works out as £1.24m a week. For context, Liverpool’s current top earner, Mohamed Salah, is on a salary of around £350,000 per week.

Afcon 2023: Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah misses Egypt’s next two games with hamstring injury

Mohamed Salah will miss Egypt’s vital Africa Cup of Nations Group B game against Cape Verde on Monday with a hamstring injury. The Liverpool forward, 31, has also been ruled out of a last-16 tie should Egypt qualify. Salah limped off before half-time in the 2-2 draw with Ghana on Thursday. The result has left the record seven-time African champions needing to beat the already-qualified Cape Verde to guarantee their progression. “Tests on Mohamed Salah, the captain of the Egypt national team, proved that he suffered a hamstring injury and will miss the next two matches of the team at the Afcon,” the Egyptian Football Association said. Salah will therefore only feature in the tournament again if Egypt advance to a quarter-final on 2 or 3 February. Earlier on Friday Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp suggested Salah’s hamstring problem was likely to be severe, given the forward had missed just 10 league games for the Reds in more than six seasons. “He was shocked and couldn’t see why he was hit by something so intense,” said Klopp. “You have these hamstring injuries in a different way. He felt it and we know how rarely Mo goes off, or needs to go off, so it is definitely something.” Losing Salah, who is on the cusp of 100 caps for his country, comes as a major blow to Egypt, who have made a sluggish start to their campaign in the Ivory Coast, collecting two points from two matches. Salah scored a last-gasp penalty on Sunday, after a VAR decision, to help Egypt draw 2-2 with Mozambique to avoid an embarrassing opening defeat, and they also twice had to come from behind against Ghana. The last of Egypt’s seven titles at the Cup of Nations came in 2010, a year before Salah made his international debut.

Angelo Mathews returns for Zimbabwe T20Is

Veteran Angelo Mathews has been named in Sri Lanka’s squad for the upcoming T20I series at home against Zimbabwe. The 36-year-old, who last featured for Sri Lanka in the shortest format back in 2021, once again finds himself back in the reckoning during a World Cup year, as was the case during the recent ODI World Cup. Mathews had also been left out of the 50-over format since 2021 but injuries saw him making the cut to the squad later on as a replacement. The T20I series will see Wanindu Hasaranga taking over as Sri Lanka’s full-time captain in the shortest forma while Charith Asalanka will reprise his vice-captain role from the ODI side. Apart from the skipper who makes a return from injury, the likes of Nuwan Thushara and Akila Dananjaya are the other notable comeback men in the squad. After a raw start to his career, Thushara has made significant progress in domestic cricket and also across franchise leagues in the world. The 29-year-old was snapped up by Mumbai Indians in the 2024 IPL Auction. Meanwhile, Dananjaya’s comeback enforces Sri Lanka’s spin options as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup in West Indies and USA. Talking about the spin options, ambidextrous all-rounder Kamindu Mendis also makes a return to the squad while Dunith Wellalage and Chamika Karunaratne have been left out. Pathum Nissanka’s participation will be subject to a fitness test as the opener has been under the injury cloud. Squad: Wanindu Hasaranga(c), Charith Asalanka, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Kusal Janith Perera, Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka. Dhananjaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis, Pathum Nissanka – subject to fitness, Maheesh Theekshana. Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara, Akila Dananjaya

ICC rates India vs South Africa 2nd Test pitch ‘unsatisfactory’, Cape Town gets demerit point

The verdict is out. The Newlands pitch has been rated ‘unsatisfactory by the ICC’. The pitch on which the 2nd Test between India and South Africa was played has been given an ‘unsatisfactory’ rating by the ICC after the game concluded inside 2 days as the shortest Test match of all time. A total of just 107 were bowled across with 33 wickets falling, with South Africa getting bowled out twice and India losing three in its final pursuit of 79. The decision comes under the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process with match referee Chris Broad expressing concerns over the nature of the Newlands wicket. “The pitch in Newlands was very difficult to bat on. The ball bounced quickly and sometimes alarmingly throughout the match, making it difficult to play shots. Several batters were hit on the gloves and many wickets also fell due to the awkward bounce,” Broad said. Wrap up the year gone by & gear up for 2024 with HT! Click here The ICC vigilantly monitors the quality of pitches and outfields. Should a pitch be deemed substandard by the match referee, it is hit by demerit points under a strict system. An unsatisfactory pitch or outfield results in the allocation of one demerit point. The weight of this demerit system is substantial, as accumulating six points triggers a year-long prohibition from hosting international matches. This ban doubles to two years when the points reach 12. It’s important to note that these points have a finite lifespan; they expire after five years, affording venues an opportunity for redemption. Cape Town Test summed up In a shocking turn of events, the Test folded early into the second session on Day 2. After South Africa stand-in captain Dean Elgar won the toss and opted to bat under sunny skies, they were rolled over for 55 – their lowest Test total since readmission and against India – with Mohammed Siraj claiming a career-best 6/15. India’s reply was an equally roller coaster of a ride as they lost six wickets for 0 runs – collapsing from 153/4 to 153 all out – still winning a lead of 98 runs. The hosts walked out to bat in their second innings on the same day – Day 1 – were a tad better but not enough to push the result of the match in their favour. Jasprit Bumrah followed Siraj and secured a six-wicket-haul of his own, even as Aiden Markram resisted with one of the greatest centuries of all time. South Africa were bowled out for 172, setting India less than 80 to get. With the ghosts of 81 all out and 66 all out looming, Yashasvi Jaiswal provided India a cracking start – racing to 28 off 23 balls with six fours before he, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli perished in quick succession. Shreyas Iyer struck a four to score the winning runs as India levelled the series 1-1 – a monumental result given they were steamrolled in three days in Centurion the game before. How legends and Rohit reacted The pitch was criticised by a plethora of former cricketers, including Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar, who called the surface ‘dangerous’ for batting. Rohit, while batting in India’s second innings, copped a blow when a ball suddenly erupted out of nowhere after pitching. A visibly frustrated Rohit let out an anguished reaction, but it wasn’t until the post-match press conference where he really tucked into the Newlands pitch. The India captain admitted it was challenging but while he made it clear that the India team has no issues batting on such surfaces, he reiterated that others need to ‘keep their mouths’ shut about pitches on which Test matches are played back in India.

ODI leg added to Afghanistan’s tour of Sri Lanka

The Afghanistan Cricket Board, on Sunday, announced the dates for Afghanistan’s all-formats away tour of Sri Lanka which will be held in February. Afghanistan will play a one-off Test followed by three ODIs and three T20Is. They will then head to the UAE where they will host Ireland for a full series which includes one Test, three ODIs and three T20Is. The one-off Test will be played at the SSC in Colombo from February 2 to 6. The R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo will host the three ODIs on February 9, 11 and 14. The teams will then travel to Dambulla for the three T20Is which will be played on February 17, 19 and 21. The series against Ireland begins with the Test which will be held from February 28 to March 3 in Abu Dhabi. The ODIs and the T20Is will all be played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. March 7, 9 and 12 are the dates announced for the ODI matches while the T20Is will be played on March 15, 17 and 18. The tour of Sri Lanka initially included only the Test and the three T20Is but the ACB held talks with the SLC to facilitate the addition of the three ODIs. “The addition of these three ODIs is a significant move to ensure a complete and comprehensive tour which not only provides good exposure to Afghanistan Cricket but will also foster stronger relations between the two nations. Playing Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka is always tricky but is a challenge that AfghanAtalan can easily embrace,” said ACB chairman Mirwais Ashraf. ACB CEO Naseem Khan added: “The Year 2024 is a very busy and full of highly voltage competitions for the Afghanistan National Team which is a very good and positive sign for Afghanistan Cricket. The upcoming tours of India, and Sri Lanka, and then the home series against Ireland will help us to prepare the team for the much-important T20 World Cup. Eagerly looking for the multiple series upfront.” @officialsquarexsports

Trent Alexander-Arnold: Liverpool defender out for ‘a few weeks’ with knee injury

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been ruled out for “a few weeks” with a knee injury. The England international, 25, suffered the injury during Sunday’s 2-0 FA Cup third round win against Arsenal. “Trent hyperextended his knee during the last game so he has a little tear in the lateral ligament of his knee and he will need time to recover,” said Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders. “He had a scan and he will be out for a few weeks, so let’s see after that.” Lijnders added: “It is a big blow as he was one of our most important players. Even in bad spells he was the one putting the balls where we needed the difference. “We will have to find new dynamics without him because he made our game flexible but hopefully it is three weeks. “He will get some rest and then hopefully he can come back to where he was. Because this guy was decisive in all the games and was the one who created constantly for us from deep and gave the team a high level of flexibility. “We will really miss him.” It means Alexander-Arnold will definitely miss Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Fulham at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s side then face Bournemouth in the Premier League on 21 January with the second leg against the Cottagers taking place three days later. They then face Norwich or Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup fourth round on the weekend of the 27 January before rounding off the month hosting Chelsea in the Premier League on 31 January. Alexander-Arnold, who was appointed club vice-captain last summer, has made 25 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool this season, scoring two goals. Although primarily a right-back, the academy graduate has successfully pushed forward into midfield at times this season. Liverpool are already without forward Mohamed Salah as he is on international duty with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations, while midfielder Wataru Endo is with Japan at the Asia Cup. Lijnders said left-backs Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas should return to training at the end of the month as they continue their recovery from shoulder injuries. Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is also still out with a hamstring problem but captain Virgil van Dijk is fit to face Fulham on Wednesday after recovering from illness. The Merseyside club are three points clear at the top of the Premier League and have progressed through to the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Hurricanes end campaign with inconsequential win

Fifties from Matthew Wade (63 off 41) and Ben McDermott (50 off 35) along with an all-round show from Nathan Ellis (16 off 5 and 2-29) helped Hobart Hurricanes to eke out a narrow seven-run win over Melbourne Stars at the MCG on Monday (January 15). The Hurricanes openers were instrumental in their team getting an above-par total and the target of 188 proved to be far too many for the Stars despite the efforts of Beau Webster (55* off 43), Marcus Stoinis (48 off 32) and Glenn Maxwell (32 off 18). Put into bat, the Hurricanes got going through a fluent 86-run stand off 60 deliveries between Wade and McDermott. While the surface was better than the typical MCG deck, strokemaking still wasn’t as easy as it would be at a batting-friendly venue. Wade and McDermott started with a bang in the powerplay and then consolidated on the gains thereafter before being separated off the last ball before drinks. It was just the opening Stars needed as their spinners Daniel Lawrence (4-35) and Imad Wasim (2-35) inflicted a collapse. Macalister Wright and Tim David played short cameos but Hurricanes missed partnerships to carry the good work of their openers forward. Ellis’ heroics in the 20th over ensured that the visitors finished with a strong total. The chase didn’t begin well for the Stars who lost both their openers for not much on the board. It meant that their starry middle order had to do the bulk of the work. Webster stitched a 44-run stand off 31 balls with Maxwell to reignite the innings while a 80-run stand off 54 balls with Stoinis kept the chase going. However, it always seemed like the Hurricanes were marginally in front. Ellis followed up his cameo with a wily bowling display to choke the run flow. He picked timely breakthroughs and also bowled the tough overs to keep his side in front. With 32 needed off 12 balls, Ellis produced a brilliant penultimate over, conceding just eight runs to all but seal the result. Peter Hatzoglou did concede 16 off the final over but that included a six in the final delivery when the game was already done. Stars did well to stay in the chase but a target in excess of 185 was always going to be dicey at the MCG. Brief scores: Hobart Hurricanes 187/8 in 20 overs (Matthew Wade 63, Ben McDermott 50; Daniel Lawrence 4-35) beat Melbourne Stars 180/4 in 20 overs (Beau Webster 55*, Marcus Stoinis 48; Nathan Ellis 2-29) by seven runs
